Today we honoured the legacy of Terry Fox.  The morning began with a school-wide assembly, where Mrs. Kloschinsky and Mr. Coffin shared videos and stories about Terry Fox.  In the afternoon, we put on our walking shoes (and boots!) and hit the pavement to walk in memory of those who are fighting and those we have lost to cancer.

A special Thank You to the Devon's Lions Club for the healthy post-walk snack and the parents who were able to join us.

Remember, Monday is Orange Shirt Day.

Today we successfully reached the goal of 10 minutes of Daily 5 Read to Self! Students have been introduced to reading strategy to build comprehension: Check for Understanding and Back Up and Reread.

The Daily 5™ is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.

How does it work?
Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. These choices include
  • Read to Self,
  • Work on Writing,
  • Read to Someone,
  • Listen to Reading, and
  • Word Work.
Daily 5 classrooms produce productive, highly engaged students who are developing a true love of literacy.
The benefits of The Daily 5 for teachers and schools include the following:
  • students develop independence, stamina, and accountability;
  • less time consumed by classroom management leaves more for instruction;
  • the framework adapts flawlessly to district-adopted curriculums and state mandates;
  • improves schoolwide literacy achievement; and
  • behaviors of independence transfer to other content areas.

In Math, we have been solving simple addition and subtraction problems. Subtraction refers to "taking away" and students have been drawing and using pictures to solve subtraction problems.

In Writer's Workshop, we have been using a web to brainstorm and then write a 5 sentence paragraph. We have been following the "Hamburger Model".

Wednesday 11 September 2019

This morning, Mrs. Kloshchinsky joined 2C for a classroom meeting. A classmate lost his mom over the summer and, with his permission, we addressed the fact of his loss, and the emotions and behaviors associated with his grief. Students were very sad about their friend's loss and were invited to share their thoughts and emotions as we passed a talking stick around the circle.

My Big, Dumb, Invisible Dragon is a story for children dealing with loss, particularly the death of a parent. Although grief is a heavy topic, Angie Lucas and Birgitta Sif handle it deftly for children, using the metaphor of the dragon, a light tone, and touches of humor. The book shows that healing takes time and that it’s OK to experience a wide range of emotions as you process a really big loss.You can listen to the story HERE.

In the afternoon, students learned to use their Chromebooks.  Today's focus was on proper care and logging in. Most students were easily able to successfully log in and use the track-pad.

The first days of school are often stressful.  We have been discussing The Zones of Regulations and meeting the characters of Inside Out .  You may hear your child refer to their emotions as Blue, Yellow, Red or Green.  Our goal is to be in the green zone - ready to learn!
