Crazy Hair Day on Thursday!

In Poetry today, students created Cinquains with their table groups. Here is an example of one:

Blood Hound

Today in Math, students were introduced to the algorithm method, or STACK THEM (as we refer to it), of addition.  This is a challenging concept for many students, but with practice it will become more clear.  The most important thing is to remember our little math chant: "When we Stack Them, we always start with the ones".  Click HERE for an illustrated example of this method.  Students now havethree methods for solving double digit addition equations: theOpen Number-lineTens Mat (rods/cubes) and Stack Them.  Students are working to become proficient users of all three methods.

Prior to Spring Break, several teachers from RBES attended a Words Their Way Professional Development Session.  I bought back several new activities and so we have been changing up our Word Sort Practice and trying the new activities this week. Yesterday, students did the activity called "Write the Sort".

Today was Mental Health Wellness Day.  Students were divided into 11 groups which consisted of students from all grades and classes; they spent the morning rotating through three activities with.  Thank you to Ms. Angell and the CAP team for all of their support in the planning and implementation of this fabulous day!  You can click HERE to see a compilation of the school photos.

This was our final MindUp lesson with Mrs. Kehoe.  She lead us through two different mindful activities.  The first was mindful smelling and the second was mindful tasting.  Ask your child to tell you all about them!  We also learned that when we experience something that makes us happy, our brains release a chemical called dopamine. This is important for learning because it helps us concentrate, pay attention and encourages us to keep trying.

Wednesday 6 April 2016

Today we had the pleasure of having Mrs. Kehoe in our classroom again to teach the second MindUp lesson.  We reviewed the neuroscience from last class, focusing on the roles of the hippocampus, amygdala and prefrontal cortex.  A poster of the concepts can be found HERE.  The focus of today's lesson was being mindful; students also used the 'lotus flower'and 'finger trace' breathing techniques to practice calming and being mindful. Ask your child to share with you these breathing techniques and the difference between mindful and unmindful.

Early Dismissal Tomorrow

In Social Studies today, students sorted specific terms related to one of the three Canadian Communities which we are studying: Iqaluit, Meteghan and Saskatoon. Tomorrow, we will be looking at what a natural resource is and what natural resources are found in Meteghan.

To launch our poetry unit, students wrote Acrostic Poems using their first names.

Welcome Back!

Today students had a special guest, Mrs. Kehoe came in and did the first of three Mind Up introduction lessons.  We are so excited to officially launch this curriculum in our classroom! Students were extra excited to learn about neuroscience today and how the brain affects us.  They held their fists together and compared it to three parts of the brain: - prefrontal cortex (wise owl), amygdala (guard dog) and hippocampus (happy hippo).  Ask them to share their learning with you!
