Happy Halloween from RBES!

Halloween BINGO

Halloween Costumes!

Giant Pumpkin Word Search

In the morning, 2C students created stories about a monster and played Frankenstein, Race to 100!

Our afternoon was filled with Halloween themed stations.  Thank you to the parents of: Kairo, Maddy, Aydin and Myla, who provided the snack for our Halloween afternoon.

Reminder: Tomorrow is a PD day, there is no school.

Monday 30 October 2017

Tomorrow is Halloween!

Students are asked to come to school in their costumes. The Annual RBES Costume Parade will begin at 9 am, feel free to join us! After the parade, our morning will be as 'normal' as possible, working on our Word Sort, Halloween Math and Monster Writing. In the afternoon, students will rotate through various Halloween themed centers and nibble on delicious snacks.

We finished our first unit in Science, and moved right along into Social Studies. In Grade Two, students will learn about 3 different communities: Meteghan, Iqaluit and Saskatoon. Today we launched with the Big Idea: What makes Meteghan, Nova Scotia a unique, dynamic community within Canada? by discussing what a community is and what the word 'unique' means. We decided that the best way to learn about a community is to go there, and that's exactly what we are going to do!

In Math, we began our Numbers to 100 unit, by playing a game of Number Line Scoot. Students enjoyed moving around the classroom, filling in missing numbers on a number line to 100.

In Music today, the students did a great job of keeping the beat to a fun Halloween song.

Thursday 19 October 2017

I am not sure who was more excited today, me or the students!?!??!  We had an awesome time at Fred Penner!  It is unbelievable to think that at 70 years old, he can still bring that much energy and excitement into a room; he is a true Canadian legend.

Today was our first experience with the Chromebooks.  It was a very gentle introduction, but students are excited to practice logging in and also testing out Grade 2 Mathletics next week!

Reminders:
- There is no school tomorrow, as it is a PD Day.
- If your child did not return his/her home reading today, please do so on Monday.

Library Tomorrow

Thank you, Mrs. Ott, for supplying this month's ingredients for Tasty Tuesday. The snack was spooktacular!

As we are nearing the end of our Patterns unit, students completed a review assignment on repeating and growing patterns. We are also working on using growing patterns to solve math problems. Ask them to show you 2 ways to solve this problem: There are 7 scarecrows in the field. There are 2 birds on each scarecrow. How many birds are there in all?

Please complete online Fred Penner permission form and payment ASAP

In science today, students learned that not all liquids mix because some liquids have a greater density.

In Math, we are continuing with Growing Patterns where students extend numerical patterns. For example, what comes next?

16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26,  _?_

Fruit Orders due on October 19!

Our home reading and Rainbow Words programs began today.  Details about home reading can be found inside your child's reading log.  Details about Rainbow Words can be found on the note that came home and also on our class website.  Please be sure to assist your child in remembering his/her reading bags/books/rings every Friday.

Students have been working hard to transfer their knowledge of +/-0 and +/-1 into long-term memory for quick, rote recall.  Working on these strategies at home will help to strengthen your child's rote recall of their basic facts.  Additional information about basic facts can be found on Basic Fact Strategies and Basic Fact Games tabs of our website.

In Science, we continued our exploration of liquids. Today we learned the term viscosity. Molasses moves very slowly, so it has a high viscosity.

Thursday 5 October 2017

Students had a fabulous time this morning meeting their Grade 2 and Grade 4 buddies.  We are partnered with Mrs. Murtha-Toles and Mr. Van Huis's classes and we can't wait to spend more time with them!
I was away this afternoon at a district-wide Grade 2 Curriculum Mapping PD session.  It was a fabulous opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across the district while strengthening our knowledge of Social Studies curriculum organization and implementation.

Reminders:
- Tomorrow is our weekly assembly.
