Strategies Toolkit

In Math today, students used the "guess and check" strategy, using objects, to solve a problem. Students had to use ALL of the beads to make a repeating pattern. There were many correct solutions!

No School Tomorrow!

During Math Facts time today, students completed their +/- Post test.  I am super pleased with the growth that was towards mastering this strategy! Next week, our focus is +/- 1! To end the week, we played the Adding & Subtracting Zero Horse Race game....super fun!

Taking some time to chill with a good book at the end of the day!

Tuesday 15 September 2015

We had our first Library block today!

During Math Facts, we continued our focus on the Plus/Minus Zero Strategy.  Using a deck of cards, we wrote addition and subtraction sentences.  We learned that when we add numbers, the order does not matter.  8 + 0 = 8 and 0 + 8 = 8!

We began our first unit, Looking At Places,  in Social Studies today by working through a textbook Scavenger Hunt.  Students were super excited to browse through their very first textbook!

Wednesday....

Today students had their first small group assembly with Mrs. Kloschinsky.  This is something that will happen every Wednesday for the entire year.  There will still be a whole school assembly on Friday, but this smaller format mid week provides her an opportunity to focus on character education with a targeted audience.

In the afternoon we continued to work our social studies mapping project.  Students learned the terms: title, compass rose & key.

I am seeking parents to volunteer to bring the ingredients for Tasty Tuesday in November, January, February, March, April & June.  Please email me directly if you are interested.  Thank you in advance, without you, we can not do this fun activity!!

Tuesday 8 September 2015

The beginning of another busy week....

Stepping Stones .. A new game we learned during Calendar.

In Math today, students used various manipulatives to create repeating patterns.

During Daily 5, we continued to build our stamina: we are up to 3 minutes! Students were also introduced to a Comprehension (I understand what I read) Strategy: Check for Understanding.  Good readers stop frequently to check for understanding or to ask who and what.

The First Week!

The first week of Grade Two has come to an end.

Today we continued our Daily 5 introduction by discussing ways to read a book (read the words, read the pictures).  Your child will likely come home talking about "Daily Five".  Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.  When it is up and running smoothly, students will be engaged in the Daily Five, which are comprised of: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading & Word Work. There are very specific behavior expectations that go with each Daily 5 component.  We will spend our first weeks working intensely on building our reading and writing stamina, learning the behaviors of the Daily 5 and fostering our classroom community.  I will also spend time learning about your child’s strengths and greatest needs as a reader in order to best plan for each student’s instruction. In Physed, students had fun with the Crab Walk Relay!

Students learned a new game called Spider Trap.  Super easy to play at home, ask your child how!

If you have not yet completed the following, please do so and return them to school on Tuesday:

       - t-shirt payment
       - A Million Words or Less
       - student form package
       - transportation note

First Day Jitters!

Today we drank Jitter Juice, practiced routines, took selfies, participated in a school wide a ssembly and spent the afternoon singing and moving with Mary Lambert.

Your child brought home an agenda and blue folder, which are jam packed with important notes and information.  Please take a few minutes this evening to review the notes and do not hesitate to email if you have any questions.
