In PE this week, the focus is Mats & Gymnastics: Jumping and Landing.

We are surviving the frigid temperatures in Iqaluit, Nunavut, as we have been exploring the different land forms. The land around Iqaluit is rolling and rocky.  The land in Iqaluit is permafrost.  Plants cover the ground.  There are no trees.  In winter, everything is covered in snow and ice. Even in summer, the ground below the surface is always frozen.  Iqaluit is on a bay called Koojessy Inlet.  In winter, the bay and river are frozen solid.  But from July to November, there is no ice.  Many little rivers and lakes near Iqaluit also thaw out then.

In Math, students learned a new game called, "Build The Biggest". In this game, students built and compared numbers to 100. Ask your child how to play this game!  Using dominoes to write addition sentences, students observed that changing the order of numbers in addition does not change the total. Ask them if changing the order of numbers in subtraction sentences changes the situation!

Welcome Back to 2019!

In PE this week, students are participating in "Movement and Mats", the focus includes:  balancing, jumping, landing, and rolling.

In Social Studies we began discussions about the next community we will be "traveling" to, Iqlauit, Nunavut.  After checking the temperature in Iqaluit, we quickly realized that it's imperative to pack for frigid temperatures!

In Math we launched our seventh unit, Number Sense: Addition and Subtraction with Numbers to 100. In this unit, students will review counting and ordering numbers to 100. They will also explore various strategies and tools for solving addition and subtraction problems within 100. Students will use hundreds charts, base ten blocks, ten-frames, and number lines. Strategies will include counting forwards and counting backwards, and making use of the connection between addition and subtraction.

During Writer's Workshop, students were introduced to another planning tool: the web. We are planning and writing a paragraph about our Winter Break.

Today was a busy day of crafting with Mrs. K. Students used Mrs. Kloschinsky fancy scrapbooking tools to create adorable Christmas Cards!

There is no word sort or assessment this week.  Instead, we will be working on a holiday syllable sort in class.

In Science, we are continuing our exploration of magnets. Today students tested the strength of various magnets. Some magnets are stronger than others! We also realized that our chain of magnets became temporary magnets! COOL!

Students have been busy sorting data and presenting it as a concrete graph.  They have also been reading and analyzing pictographs! Complete this survey tonight:

This week in Science, we launched our unit on Magnetism.  Students learned that a magnet is any object that produces a magnetic field.  They also identified five types of magnets: cow, bar, ring, wand, and horseshoe. 

Students predicted and tested various materials to answer the question: Are all materials attracted to a magnet? We discovered that not all materials are attracted to a magnet!

Social Studies

Our trip to Meteghan has come to an end! Through practical activities, students were able to demonstrate an understanding and appreciate the geography, culture, language, heritage and economics and resources that shape Meteghan, making it one of many unique, dynamic communities in Canada.

As a culminating technology assignment, students put their knowledge of Meteghan to the test!  They created the first slide of their Communities in Canada presentation.  At the end of each unit, students will demonstrate their learning by adding text and images about the important aspects of the land, history, traditions, and people from each community.  

On Friday afternoon we celebrated the Acadian Culture.  Student were able to sample Clam Chowder, Oat Cakes and Snow Pancakes. They also made a lighthouse out of clay and played a fun Fishin’ Addition Game. What a great way to wrap up our Social Unit!

Math

We have completed Unit 5: 2-D Shapes. Students students were able to identify, describe, compare, and manipulate 2-D geometric shapes: circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and other polygons. Today we began Unit 6: Sorting and Graphing. We learned the terms sort, group and data!

Elf On The Shelf

We have been busy journaling about Chippy's, our Elf On The Shelf, mischievous behavior. Students are writing compound sentences, adding either the word and or because. Chippy, and his friend Elfie, pulled a fast one on us today! They switched rooms with another Grade Two class. I wonder what he will be up to tomorrow...
