In Math today we began Unit 10 Number Sense: Using 10 to Add and Subtract. In this unit, students will use 10 to add and subtract. Students will recognize pairs that make 10 and will identify such pairs to facilitate mental computation. In extensions, students will extend this method to other convenient numbers, such as 20 and 50. They will add and subtract 10 on a hundreds chart and will recognize patterns in such addition and subtraction. They will use the patterns they observed to add and subtract 10 mentally.

In Social Studies, we discussed how the Inuksuk is an important part of the Inuit culture. We made our own Inuksuks.

HaPpY 100th DaY of Grade Two!

Today we celebrated being in Grade Two for 100 days by rotating through various stations throughout the school. Students enjoyed many activities which included: STEM activities, making Trail Mix and Fruit Loop necklaces, creating a 100 Monster and 100 inspired picture, and a couple movement breaks and an obstacle course.

Making Friendship Pins

This crew LOVED going through their Valentine's Cards.

Students were excited to test their Hot Chocolate Containers! The winning Hot Chocolate Container only lost 23 degrees Celsius over a span of 2 hours! So many amazing, creative insulators!

We are preparing to travel to our second Canadian community, Iqaluit, Nunavut! Today we googled the answers to questions we had about Iqaluit! We were shocked to learn TREES NO NOT grow in Iqaluit because of permafrost!

In Math, we are continuing to balance equations. Students used pan balances to illustrate equalities and inequalities and solve simple equations.

We have been researching facts about the Polar Bear. Students are using Google Slides to create a presentation to share their learning.

It's Hot and Cold Temperature Week in Science. Today, students took the Polar Bear Plunge, protected with a large layer of BLUBBER! Through an experiment, we discovered that tin foil is a great insulator!

In Math, students played a game, "Build The Biggest", to practice using tens and ones blocks to represent a number, and comparing numbers to 100. The person with the largest number won a token!

Welcome Back to 2020!

Students were excited to journal many stories of their adventures over their Christmas Break.

In Math, we began Unit 7: Number Sense: Addition and Subtraction with Numbers to 100. In this unit, students will review counting and ordering numbers to 100. They will also explore various strategies and tools for solving addition and subtraction problems within 100. Students will use hundreds charts, base ten blocks, ten-frames, and number lines. Strategies will include counting forwards and counting backwards, and making use of the connection between addition and subtraction.

What a beautiful concert put on by our Grade 1 & 2 classes, led by the talented Mrs. Stanski! Thank you to all of you who could join us for one/both of the performances!

In Math today, we began Unit 5: 2-D Shapes. Students will identified straight and curved lines and sides, and open and closed lines.

In Social Studies, our focus was Acadian Traditions. Students read through posters detailing many different Acadian Traditions.

Sparkle has returned to 2C! We are excited to see what mischief she will get in to!

In Social Studies this week, we continued our investigation of Meteghan, Nova Scotia. Our focus was on their Daily Life. We had fun whale watching, clam digging and lobster fishing!



In Math, we continued measuring, using different units and comparing lengths.

Remembrance Day Assembly @ 10:45

Our focus for the month of November will be Social Studies and the community of Meteghan. Students will be guided through a month long exploration of this east coast Acadian community.  If you have visited Meteghan or have Acadian artifacts, please reach out via email, we would love for you to share them with us!!

We are ready to begin our adventure! This morning we packed our suitcases, received our passports and bought our plane tickets! Students compared the weather in Meteghan to the weather in Devon. Meteghan's temperature is warmer than Devon's, and there isn't any snow....YET! Students packed pants, long sleeved shirts, runners and hoodies for their trip. 

Up up and away!  This afternoon, we flew to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, special thank you to Air Canada for the safe flight.  Since Yarmouth was not our final destination, students boarded a bus and made the 38 kilometer drive to Meteghan.  Students took a look through TripAdvisor and realized that there are not many places for visitors to stay. They researched and chose to stay either at the Anchor Inn Bed and Breakfast or Au Havre Du Capitaine. We are looking forward to learning about this unique Canadian community.
