Students learned the term attribute today in Math.  They were faced with a challenge of identifying which attributes (shape, size, colour, direction or thickness) were changing in a pattern.

Our focus for the month of November will be Social Studies and the community of Meteghan. Students will be guided through a month long exploration of this east coast Acadian community.  If you have visited Meteghan or have Acadian artifacts, please reach out via email, we would love for you to share them with us!!

In math students continued their exploration of repeating patterns and identifying pattern core.  Using a variety of manipulativse, they created a number of repeating patterns.

Wednesday, 24 October 2018

We dove into our third Math Unit today, Patterns! We learned the math words: patterncore and term today.  Ask your child to make a pattern at home this evening using forks and spoons.  Then ask him/her to identify the core (the part that repeats).

In Social Studies, we began our investigation into What Is A Community? A community is a place where people live together, work together, and play together. Living in a community means cooperating with each other. This means working together, respecting the rights of others and following the rules of the community. We discussed that both Devon and 2C are communities that we are all part of.

Students have finished the planning stages of their Monster In A Jar writing! I am looking forward to reading and sharing of their final drafts!

In Daily 5, we launched word work.  This activity provides "students an opportunity to experiment with spelling patterns, memorize high-frequency words, and develop a genuine curiosity for and interest in new and unique words. By playing with words, word patterns, word families, prefixes, suffixes, and so on, students hone their knowledge of words and increase their speaking and writing skills." (Daily 5 website)

Students began a week-long writing project called, Monster in a Jar.  Yesterday they trapped their monsters - some are scary, while others are cuddly. Today they began to plan their writing, answering questions to guide their writing and then turning their answers into sentences.

In the afternoon, we were treated to an Eatrh Ranger Experience!  There are so many ways that we can help the Earth; become an Earth Ranger today!

Monday, 22 October 2018

Students used their knowledge about materials which absorb or repel liquids to solve a science problem.  Students were asked to choose a material that would make a perfect raincoat.  Ask your child what material they would use and why.

In Math, students learned to write ordinal numbers and used ordinal numbers to talk about position.

See you at tomorrow's Parent Meetings!

Thank you, Mrs. Wright for supplying the ingredients for this month's Tasty Tuesday...the Ghost Brownies were SPOOKTACULAR!

Today we continued our work on solving Math Word Problems. Ask your child to draw a picture and write a subtraction sentence for this problem:

13 pumpkins in the pumpkin patch
none of the pumpkins were picked
How many pumpkins were left in the pumpkin patch?

2C Scientists were up to the challenge today to Stop The Leak! Ask your child what materials they used to waterproof their container.

Parent meeting information is available on the RBES Website (click HERE).  During Parent meeting night, Mrs. Kloschinsky will be running PowerSchool parent sessions; I encourage all parents in 2D to attend a session before or after our meeting.

In Science today, we continued our exploration of liquids with mixing a solid with a liquid. Students learned the term dissolve by observing the making of yummy Blue Raspberry Jello!

Thursday, 11 October 2018

In Math, we began solving simple word problems that involved addition to 20.  See if your child can show you how to solve this math problem (showing both a drawing and an addition sentence):  2C was carving pumpkins.  Ms. Jenae brought 5 pumpkins, Mrs. Suter brought 7 more pumpkins, How many pumpkins were there altogether?

In Science, students learned the words absorb and repel. We tested many materials to observe which material would work best to make a homemade umbrella. Ask you child what material they would chose.

Reminders:

  • Return Home Reading

Tuesday, 9 October 2018

In a science demonstration today, students observed how some liquids are heavier, more dense, than others.

Today we began our home reading program.  All information about the program is in the canvas bag, but here's the Coles Notes version:

- read 15 minutes per day, 5 days a week
- if your child reads 15 minutes, initial the home reading calendar page in his/her agenda
- home reading bags come home on Monday and are to be returned every Friday (Thursday if it is a short week)
- students can read any "good fit books" from their reading bag, library books or books from home.
- every few weeks, I will send home a new Parent Pipeline.  This document is very valuable, as it explains strategies we are discussing in class, please review it and reinforce the strategies with your child during his/her home reading time.

Together we can foster a love of literature and support your child as he/she becomes a voracious reader!

In Science, we continued our exploration of liquids. Today we learned the term viscosity. Molasses moves very slowly, so it has a high viscosity.

Tuesday, 2 October 2018

In Science, we have launched our Exploring Liquids unit.  Through hands on activities, students are able to recognize and describe characteristics of different liquids. Some of the new vocabulary introduced include surface tension, opaque and transparent.

Water can make sound!

Water can hang from our fingertips!

Water does not have a smell!

Water can be dragged!

Water can move!

Surface Tension - the invisible skin that water has!

Monday, 1 October 2018

Today we began our Word Sorts, this week students will learn and practice activities in class and then differentiated lists will begin coming home next week.

Today we launched Buddy Read in Daily 5.  "Of all the choices children participate in, Read to Someone is often their favorite.  Reading with someone helps readers, especially developing readers, increase areas of comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and prosody.  It also increases reading involvement, attention, and collaboration. What's more, children love partner reading and readily participate with books they choose." (Daily 5 website).
